The hightlight of the weekend was the Rock Paper Scissors show at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Among the participants were Mike Watt, Lee Renaldo (and Sonic Youth), Gibby Haynes, Ron English and Raymond Pettibon. I also meet Craig Stecyk of dogtown and the zboys fame
On 16 Jan I shot an assignment for Rolling Stone covering Scott Weiland and the first date on his current tour. Rarely without controversy I found him to be a pretty nice guy, albeit a little tardy to his own show. Also got to meet Doug Grean whose music projects include The Crystal Method of which I am a fan… not to mention Paz de la Huerta.
Aileen Alder is virtuoso in a sea of Theremin hacks (of which I am one), her style of playing comes from the Clara Rockmore school, ie smooth and precise. First Night is self described as a public celebration of the arts that revives the ancient tradition of marking the passage of time with art, ritual, and festivity. This is the third year Austin’s made a stab at the new year’s celebration, and it feels like it’s starting to take on the Austin ethos. The
Brian Alesi and I will be in a show at at IF+D in January. The photo set I’ll be showing represents an incorporation of traditional portraiture elements in a live music setting.
